Well, I guess I'll pretend to know what I'm talking about here, and try to give a bit of history. Originally, the mini-HOWTOs were much smaller than the "full" HOWTOs, perhaps the length of an article for a trade publication, perhaps 2 or 3 times that. The "full" HOWTOs were often much larger, and covered a broader scope. We've talked about merging the mini-HOWTOs into the "full" HOWTOs for a long time now, but just haven't gotten it done. I've got ideas on better ways to differentiate document types, but I just haven't gotten time to write them up yet.

I noticed that there's a problem with the PDF (from DocBook) HOWTOs:
1. DocBook requires a <para> or something after a <listitem> tag.
2. Jade retains <para> (as <P>, naturally) in the HTML version.
3. HTMLDoc breaks the line before the <P> tag.

The resulting list looks like:

    First item.

    Second item.
*
    Third item.
A possible solution is to delete the unnecessary <P> and </P> tags from
the single page HTML file, like:

sed -e '/<LI$/{N;s/<LI\n><P/<LI/;}' HOWTO.html | sed -e
'/<\/P$/{N;s/<\/P\n><\/LI/<\/LI/;}' > NEWHOWTO.html

That is:
1. If a line ends with <LI and the next line begins with ><P -> delete ><P

The ViewCVS software was inspired by cvsweb (by Henner Zeller). I wanted to make some changes and updates, but cvsweb was implemented in Perl (and rather poorly, IMO). So I undertook the task to convert the software to Python.
ViewCVS can browse directories, change logs, and specific revisions of files. It can display diffs between versions and show selections of files based on tags or branches. In addition, ViewCVS has "annotation" or "blame" support, and the beginnings of Bonsai-like query facilities.
